"The Light in the Wilderness”
Still shines at Washington College Academy
Washington College Academy
has been an accredited 4-year college, junior college, and college
preparatory school for day and boarding students since Dr. Samuel Doak,
DD founded the school back in 1780. Recently, as is often the case with
private schools, financial problems have forced Washington College
Academy to temporarily close her doors to boarding students and curtail
the “classical” education program that our graduates are so accustomed
to. At present we are conducting an Adult Continuing Education Program,
or as we refer to it “ACE” Program. These classes cover a wide range of
topics from Aerobics to Spanish and have been very successful. The
teachers that are working in our “ACE” Program are all certified and/or
licensed; several of them even have advanced degrees. The Academy has
implemented a baseball academy, Washington College Marlins
Baseball/Softball Academy, to properly instruct young people of all ages
how to play the sport that has become “America’s Pastime.” This program
is also proving to be very successful. There are plans in the works for
an “Appalachian Heritage Center” in the near future. There are also
plans to bring back the classical preparatory school of the past as soon
as funds are available.
The philosophy of the Academy
is centered on the principles of Christian faith and independent
education. The Academy continues the intent of the founder, Dr. Samuel
Doak, DD to provide an education to talented and motivated students. The
Academy believes in providing the opportunity for people of the
community to develop mentally, physically, spiritually, morally, and
socially each in his or her own way. The Academy seeks to impress upon
the students an appreciation for the traditions of the school, an
appreciation for the traditions of the Appalachian area, an appreciation
for the traditions of the nation; and a desire to become dedicated
citizens of a free democratic society. The Academy is a non-profit
educational source and is governed by a Board of Trustees with the
support of a strong Alumni Association. Annual giving, capital campaigns
and endowments finance the Academy.
